Established in 1876, Wakanui School has a long and proud history of catering for local Year 1 to 8 students. Situated 10km east of Ashburton, and inclusive of an enrolment zone, we enjoy a rural environment whilst maintaining urban connections.
Our small class sizes ensure that we can cater for individual learning needs. Students in Year 4 and up utilise learning technologies to support their learning through a 1:1 ratio and BYOD programme. Our senior Year 7 and 8 students have many opportunities to develop leadership skills both within and beyond the school.
At Wakanui School, we believe in supporting our students to develop skills and knowledge in the key learning areas in conjunction with strong links to our community, rural environment, and modern technology. Our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Excellence underpin all that we do.
Our school is very whānau oriented. We encourage active involvement from those who are part of the wider Wakanui family – parents, friends, grandparents, neighbours and community members. This gives Wakanui a strong foundation and a hard-working and generous support network.

Kia ora Kawakawa whanau,
Well done to everyone for doing so well at Athletics Day. I was very proud of you all and the way you showed our school values; especially resilience when things didn't go your way at an event. It was great to see so many of you come along and support us on the day.
This week is Swim Week. Can all children please have their swim bag at school each day with a named towel and togs. Can all other clothing please be named, this will help us to return clothing to the correct owner. We will be taking the students by bus to EA Networks Centre for this and then bringing them back to school. We are back in time for lunch, so children can still have hot food. With an active week last week and swimming this week I imagine that some of the class will be tired by the end of the week.
Seeing as we are away from school during our middle learning block I will try and hear all reading groups in the morning or the afternoon. We are going to read some more Fun Facts this week. They are short, which means I should be able to hear each group daily and the class enjoyed the last ones that we read.
On Wednesday we have a whole school assembly, Kauri is hosting this.
Thursday is a strike day, so there is no school for anyone.
Our Show entries will have to be completed by Wednesday afternoon as they need to be dropped at the A & P Show grounds on Thursday. So we will have a big effort to get these done during the afternoons that we have left. Last Thursday afternoon some of the class were not happy with how their pictures were looking and had asked if they could restart. Sadly we are not going to have the time to restart pictures and get them completed in 3 hours so we will try and fix up what we have done so far.
Last week there were some problems with the Speed Runner vs Hunter game that a lot of the class play during break times. After talking to the class about this I have said that it might be best that they take a break from this game and other tagging / hiding games that they play. They decided that this week and next week they can play in the ga-ga pit, play in the sand pit, play in the huts, ride a scooter, play tennis or go or the playground. So there are a lot of other options for them to do during break times. If you had any questions about this then please come and speak to me.
Have a fabulous week. I have got my fingers crossed that the winds they are forecasting aren't too bad.
Regards,
Julia
This week is swim week. You would have seen a Skool loop in regards to this last week. We will be taking the students each day by bus to EA networks centre, and then bringing them back to School. Please make sure your child has togs, towel and goggles in a swim bag, all named. Please note your children will be coming home exhausted.
I will try my best to get reading done each day this week, however please do not worry if nothing comes home.
Thursday is strike day, so there is no School for anyone.
A massive well done to all the class for athletic day, they all did so well. It can be such an overwhelming day, so I appreciate everyone's support for their children.
